WANDERER PROJECT OVERVIEW

IDEATE: RESEARCH ON
OUTDOOR RECREATION
-
Only 50.7 percent of Americans participated at least one outdoor activity in 2019.
-
In 2021, 19.4 percent of participants said outdoor activities were one of their favorite things to do, a sharp decline from 2018 when 29.4 percent said the same.
-
A recent study amongst 613 adults found: About one quarter of new outdoor participants say they don't want to continue their outdoor activities.

Younger adults show motivation to spend more time outdoors. However, outdoor participation rates amongst adults has only shown a steady incline within the last ten-thirteen years.
New participants report a strong intent to continue their outdoor pursuits.
About one-quarter of participants say they don’t want to continue their new outdoor activities. The top barriers to continue participating include travel, resuming other activities, and family demands.
DEFINE A PROBLEM SPACE
Pain Point #1: Motivation
Most young adults need positive peer pressure and inspiration to workout outdoors. Distance can play a factor.
Pain Point #2: Social
People want to be outdoors with friends. Hiking outdoors amongst younger generation is typically seen as a group activity.
Pain Point #3 : Goals
Millennials enjoy working out towards fitness goals and monitoring their exercise via apps.
Pain Point #4 : Planning
When it comes to planning hikes and finding great trails this process can be complicated and confusing.

AFTER EXPLORING THESE PAIN POINTS I DECIDED TO ASK MYSELF...
HMW MOTIVATE NEW HIKERS TO SPEND MORE TIME OUTDOORS IN ORDER TO LEAD A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?
USABILITY
After modifying my lo-fi prototype, I started usability testing. Usability testing gave me valuable feedback that I incorporated into my designs in order to provide a more optimal user experience.
I went through three rounds of usability with approximately ten participants each. The final iterations in my design incorporated new features and a superior visual identity.
OPPORTUNITY
Create a community based platform in which outdoor enthusiasts and new hikers can coordinate; hiking trips, build on their personal goals and embark on epic outdoor adventures.
This is a healthy avenue in which users can continue to workout and stay active.

For my first wireframe it was difficult for users to discern what was in the image boxes, this left them confused and felt this frame was too simple.
I didn't get the chance to add imagery or color yet but my users understood more of the categories they were looking at.
My final wireframes brought to life my concept of viewing parks by reviews and scrollable images.

Final Wireframes
After creating my visual identity and getting insightful feedback on prior prototypes. I was ready to start incorporating color, illustrations and photography to really bring the Wanderer to life.
Feedback from educators and peers was positive. They conveyed that this prototype orchestrated the right emotions and goals of the app.
that will inspire your visitors to take action.
EMPATHIZE: CONCEPT BACKGROUND
Living an active lifestyle in nature is crucial to being more healthy and having a more fulfilling life.
People who spend more time outdoors indicate higher levels of happiness and well-being.
I want to inspire a group of outdoor enthusiasts to motivate hikers and non-hikers about the benefits of spending time outdoors.
This will promote life longevity and happiness to other generations as well.
Let's focus on the Hiking Industry
